DOROTHY MARA
Dorothy G. Mara, 86, Davenport died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Genesis
West Medical Center, Davenport, after a brief illness.
Dorothy was born January 2, 1916 in Prairie du Chien to Matthew and Mary
(Mezera) Sebastian. She married Clarence L. Mara April 10, 1940 in
Prairie du Chien.
She and her husband had farmed together in Prairie du Chien before
moving to Davenport. She was then employed by the Dioceses of Davenport
at St. Vincent's Center. Her memberships include St. Mary's Catholic
Church and the Altar and Rosary of St. Mary's. Her hobbies consisted of
a wide range of interest including, canning, cooking, baking, gardening
and sewing. She was always busy sewing for the St. Mary's bazaars and
enjoyed a good garage sale. Her children, grandchildren and friends
played a special role in her life. She will be dearly missed by all of
them.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence; her children, Roger Mara,
Carmel, Ind.; Marilyn Sandler, Bettendorf; Ron Mara, Davenport; Jim
Mara, Levelland, Texas and Sharon Hobart, Davenport; 12 grandchildren
and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceeded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Celebration of Life services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church,
Davenport. The Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport assisted
the family. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church.

ALTHEA DRAKE Althea Claudine Drake, 79, of Gays Mills, passed away March 31, 2002 at the Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse. She was born in Chandlerville, Ill., on Sept. 12, 1922 to Claude and Edith (Schoonover) Armstrong. She and her seven siblings were orphaned and separated when she was six, Claudine was raised in the foster home of Rymond and Florence Cooper in Chandlerville, Ill. She married Vilas Drake on Nov. 24, 1939 in Dubuque, Iowa, he preceded her in death Aug. 12, 1988. They lived in the Muscoda and Marietta Valley areas in the early years of their marriage. In 1947 they moved to the Robert Atwood Farm which they later bought. In 1980 they moved to their present home on the north side of Gays Mills. Claudine was very active in the Gays Mills United Methodist Church for 55 years, serving as United Methodist Women President for 23 years. She enjoyed gardening, and was an excellent cook. She was a hard working farm wife and raised five children, Charles, Patty, Sharon, DuWayne, and Mark. She is survived by her children: Charles C. Drake, LaCrosse; Patty (Johnny) Helgerson, Coon Valley; and Patty's sons, David and his fiance Jane Kunde of Marshall; and Gary (Marcia) of Viroqua; and their children, Rachel, Derek and Kelsie. Also by her daughter, Sharon of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.; DuWayne's wife, Verna, and their three daughters, Jennifer, Shelly, and Anne of Westby; and her son, Mark of Gays Mills; and by a sister, Cleo Duncan of DeKalb, Ill., many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her son DuWayne in 1999; and by six brothers. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday April 5, at the Gays Mills United Methodist Church. Pastors Nancy Allen and Jeanne Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in the Gays Mills Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the Dommersnaes-Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills, and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

TERRELL HEDEMAN Terrell R. Hedeman, 57, of McGregor formerly of Round Lake, Ill., died Monday, March 4, 2002 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, following an extended illness. Terry was born Oct. 21, 1944 in McGregor to Elmer and Nelda Mae (Wheeler) Hedeman. He graduated from MarMac High School in 1962 and later the Brown institute of Broadcasting and University of Wisconsin in Business Administration. He had an extensive career in broadcasting, working with WPRE in Prairie du Chien, KMA & KFMF in Shenandoah, Iowa, WFYR and WGCI in Chicago, Ill. He was well known for "The Disco Van" performances at the International Film Festival in Chicago. He is survived by his constant companion "Buffy," his parents, Elmer and Nelda Hedeman and grandmother Clara Ward all of McGregor; three sisters: Rinda (Terry) Ferguson, Diane (Richard) Dohse, and Marlys (Albert) Hill all of Marquette; three brothers: Kevin (Susan) Hedeman of Raleigh, NC; Brian (Teresa) Hedeman of Eagan, Minn; Scott (Kim) Hedeman of Cedar Rapids and several nieces and nephews. Services will be 11 a.m. Sat., April 6, 2002 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, McGregor. A gathering of family and friends will be held at the American Legion Hall in McGregor following the service. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home of McGregor assisted the family.

DOROTHY SCHLITTER Dorothy M. Schlitter, 88, of Davenport, Iowa passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at the Kahl Home for the Aged & Infirm. She was born on Feb. 1, 1914 at Waterville, Iowa, the daughter of Vincent and Rose (Vavruska) Benda. She married Raymond Schlitter on Oct. 9, 1943 at Cherry Mound. He preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 1994. She is survived by two daughters: Ruth Schlitter, Davenport and Rita (Burgess) Walker of Rock Island; two sons: David (Sharon) Schlitter, and Donald Schlitter both of Davenport; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cecilia Benda, Prairie du Chien, and Rose (Jack) Rebholz of Madison. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Andrew Benda, Vincent Benda, Jr., Wilfred Benda, Lawrence Benda; five sisters: Bertha Anderson, Mary Benda, Alice Flom, Angela Benda, Teresa Heisig.

MINNIE RUTH OLSON Minnie R. Olson, 93, originally from the Seneca area, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2002 in the Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home, Soldiers Grove. She was born in the Township of Seneca, Crawford County July 15, 1908, the daughter of John and Rachel (Hjelle) Munson. She married Tilman T. Olson, June 17, 1931 at Utica Lutheran Church; he preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1981; she was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Ethel Munson on Jan. 31, 2002. She is survived by her five children: Janet (Harry) McKinley, Kenosha; Elmer (Betty) Olson of Whitley City, Kentucky, Leonard (Illene) Olson, Gays Mills, John (Betty) Olson of Kenosha; and Tom (Phyllis) Olson, Seneca; by fourteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sat., March 30 in the Utica Lutheran Church with Pastor Gloria Friedrich officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Dommersnaes-Bertram Family Funeral Home of Gays Mills assisted the family.

JAMES WHITTENHALL James S. Whittenhall, Sr., 70, of Eastman and formerly of Chicago, Ill., died Friday, March 29, 2002 at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 17, 1931 in Chicago, Ill., son of James and Helen (Kwasiborski) Morell. He married Patricia Hettel on Aug. 2, 1951 in Butterfield, MO. He worked as a machinist for Apex Tool in Rolling Meadows, Ill., for 28 years until his retirement. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid wood-worker. Jim was a devoted husband and a loving father, Grandfather and brother. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Whittenhall of Eastman; Four sons: James Jr. (Diane) of Cary, Ill., Thomas (Gale) of Carol Stream, Ill., Phillip (Pamela) of Genoa, Ill., and Patrick (Colette) of Bartlett, Ill.; three daughters: Judith (Scott) Schwegel of Parker, Colo., Barbara (Gary) Blake of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Nancy (Brian) Gifford of Glen Mills, PA., three brothers: Kenneth (Fran) of Blingbrook, Ill., Richard (Mickey) of Springfield, MO., and Paul Jr. (Maryann) of Chicago, Ill., 22 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Charles. Funeral services will be Monday, April 1 at 11 a.m. at the Seneca United Methodist Church in Seneca, Rev. Nancy Allen officiating. Interment will be Tuesday, April 2, at the Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin, Ill., with a graveside service at noon. Friends may call at the church on Monday, April 1 from 9 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospice Program or St. Jude's Cancer Research Center.

HELEN FLEMING Helen F. Fleming, 91, passed away March 29, 2002 at the Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home, Soldiers Grove. She was born Sept. 25, 1910 rural Gays Mills, the daughter of Patrick and Sarah (Frache) Fleming. Helen was the former owner and operator of the Mi-Lady Beauty Salon in Gays Mills. She was a life-long member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of the PCCW. Surviving are six nieces, Marita Crowley of Melrose, Mass., Theresa (Wayne) Levi of Onalaska, Sr. Jane Boland, OP of Sisinawa, Helen (Mike) Melde of Lansing, Connie (Tom) Smith of West Bend, and Sally (Gary) Norton of LaCrosse; by three nephews, Pat Boland of Gays Mills, Fritz Boland of Boscobel, and Pat Fleming of Madison. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary (Dave) Boland and Tessie Fleming and two brothers, Leo and Christopher Fleming. A mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Tom Langer will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. The Dommersnaes Bertram Family Funeral Home, Gays Mills is assisting the family.

MARTHA WACHTER Martha C. Wachter, 96, of Prairie du Chien, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at the Prairie Health Care Center. She was born June 8, 1905 in Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of Peter and Catherine (Mertz) Wagner. She married Edward Wachter on Feb. 22, 1927. Together they farmed in the Harpers Ferry, Iowa and Prairie du Chien area. Edward preceded her in death on May 10, 1964. Martha was an avid gardener, especially flowers. She is survived by a son, John (Margaret) Wachter of Prairie du Chien; two daughters: Evelyn Picha and Florence Becwar both of Prairie du Chien; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers: Art, Lawrence, Ted, Frank, Harold and Harvey, along with three sisters: Viola, Henrietta and Olive, and her parents. Funeral services will be Tuesday, April 2 at 11 a.m. at St. Johns Catholic Church, Rev. John Wambach S.J. officiating, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call on Monday, April 1, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien where there will be a wake scripture at 7:30 p.m.

EVELYN SCHNEIDER Evelyn Schneider, 91, of Prairie du Chien, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born March 8, 1911 in Prairie du Chien, daughter of Otto and Anna (Hendricks) Zabel. She married Louis Schneider on Oct. 3, 1960 at St. Gabriels Church in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2000. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Otto Insurance Agency and later for St. Gabriels Parish, both in Prairie du Chien. She is survived by nieces and nephews, a special nephew: Don (Trudy) Hackett of Marquette, Iowa. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Ervan, Alfred and Cyril Zabel, and two sisters: Veronica Hackett and Rosemary Zabel. Funeral services were held Sat., March 30 at St. Gabriels Catholic Church, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery in Prairie du Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien assisted the family. MARY SZABO Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Szabo, 74,Castalia, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 18, 2002, in Veterans Memorial Hospital at Waukon, Iowa. Wed. March 20, 2002

HELEN KUCHENBECKER Helen R. Kuchenbecker, 86, Prairie du Chien, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital. She was born May 31, 1915, in Prairie du Chien, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Feally) Novey. She married Earl Kuchenbecker on Sept. 1, 1934, at St. John's Church in Prairie du Chien. Together they owned and operated the Prairie Book Store in Prairie du Chien for many years. Earl preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1997. She enjoyed painting and artwork. She was a member of St. Gabriel's Church and the Senior Citizens Card Club. Surviving are three sons, Bob (Ann) of Prairie du Chien, Ronnie (Jackie) of Burlington and Jerry (Judy) of McGregor, a daughter Mary (Bill) Duffy of Prairie du Chien; a brother Joe (Rosey) Novey of Prairie du Chien; 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, John and Ed Novey and a sister Myra Novey. Services were Wednesday at St. Gabriel's Church, Rev. John Wambach, S.J. officiating, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family.

FRANCISZEK SWIECH Franciszek "Frank'' Swiech, 83, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Frank was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1918 in Poland. He was taken from Poland to Germany during World War II where he performed farm labor. In 1948 he came to America as a displaced person and worked for a farmer who had sponsored him in Crawford County. In 1950 Frank moved to Prairie du Chien and began employment at Campion High School. He worked there until 1974 when Campion closed, then worked for a short while with Martin Luther Preparatory School, which had taken over the Campion facilities. He retired in the early 1980s and had been a resident at the Walter Schmidt Independent Living Center in Prairie du Chien since 1998. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Jan and Duzy Swiech, one brother, Randolph and ;two sisters, Carolina and Rosie. He has no known surviving relatives. His special friends were Alice Jones, formerly of Prairie du Chien and now residing in Cave Creek, Ariz. and Connie Christoph and Dewey Christoph, both of Prairie du Chien. He also found a family of special friends in the staff and residents at the Walter Schmidt Independent Living Center. Frank was a very unassuming, friendly, quiet and reserved gentleman who lived a very simple life. Some of the things he enjoyed most in his life were reading his Polish Bible, his Rosary, going for walks and caring for his plants and flowers. Visitation was held Friday at the Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home in Prairie du Chien immediately followed by a service at the same location and burial in Calvary Cemetery, Prairie du Chien.

EDWARD ZENZ Edward P. Zenz, 84 died Feb. 13, 2002 in Phoenix Ariz. He born March 11, 1917 and was raised in Patch Grove. For 31 years he served in the Army. From 1954 to 1958 he taught ROTC at Campion. Later he served as assistant treasurer there from 1968 to 1974. After 1974 he resided in Phoenix. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, daughter Susan (Thomas) Macken of Wausau; son Michael (Cathy) Zenz of Gurnee Ill; sister Margaret Bergner of St. Louis Mo.; brother Frederick Zenz of Lancaster; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

MYRLE GLESSNER Myrle O. Glessner, 83, of Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at the Care Center, Waterloo, Iowa.

HAROLD RASMUSSEN Harold J. Rasmussen, 88, Prairie du Chien, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at the Cedar Springs Health Care Center in Cedarburg. Harold was born Aug. 23, 1913 in Beloit, son of Julius and Agnes (Henes) Rasmussen. He married Helen Felton April 10, 1941. He worked as supervisor for Badger Ordinance in Baraboo from 1941 to 1945. His educational field began as principal of schools in Danbury for one year. He spent three years as a science teacher and coach in Lone Rock, and later taught chemistry and physics for one year in Mosinee. He then taught chemistry and physics at the Prairie du Chien High School until 1968. In 1968 he became the guidance counselor at Prairie du Chien where he held that position until his retirement in 1983. Since 1983 he enjoyed his retirement with Helen employing his winter months in Lake Wales, Fla. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge 106 where he served as the Master of Lodge in 1955. He was a Kiwanian for 15 years and served as Lt. Gov. and secretary for 15 years. His hobbies included golf, choir, camping and fishing. Surviving are his wife Helen, Prairie du Chien, one son Larry (Cathy) Rasmussen of Indianapolis, Ind., one daughter Lynda (Allen) Polachowski of West Bend; six grandchildren, Stacy, Mike, Chris, Kyleigh, Nicholas and Macey; two great grandchildren, Jake and Grace. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Bette Halvorson. Services were Saturday, at the United Methodist Church, Rev. Stuart Allen officiating with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. The Garrity Funeral Home assisted the family.

LAWRENCE BENISH. SR. Lawrence C. Benish, Sr., 89, Onalaska, formerly of Prairie du Chien, died Saturday, March 2, 2002 at St. Francis Medical Center in La Crosse. Lawrence was born Aug. 21, 1912 on Limery Ridge, near Prairie du Chien to Louis and Jessie (Wachuta) Benish. He married Dorothy Torgeson on Oct. 12, 1940 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Winona, Minn. for 27 years and have been living in Onakaska for the past 25 years. He was a salesman for the Morman Manufacturing Company for many years in Winona County, Minn. He was a man of high moral character and principals and thought of his customers as his friends, always wanting people to succeed. Surviving are his wife Dorothy; two sons, Lawrence C. Benish, Jr. of Onalaska, Jerry D. (Sheryl) Benish of LaCrescent, Minn.; three grandchildren, Allison, Kirstin and Audra; two brothers, Lavern Benish of Dickeyville, Robert (Phyllis) Benish of La Crosse; four sisters, Bernice Wellendorf, Helen Noethe, Gloria Schmidt, Doris (Bill) Buening all of Prairie du Chien; two brothers-in-law, George Kalina, Prairie du Chien and Leo Falb, Elgin, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother John of Cochrane and three sisters, Leona Becwar, Margie Kalina and Evelyn Falb. Services are Wednesday, at 10:30 a.m. at Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. Friends may call from 9:30 until time of services. CHARLES WALL Charles R. Wall, 83, Eastman, died Friday, March 1, 2002 at his home. He was born Feb. 26, 1919 in Eastman, son of Charles and Mary (Prochaska) Wall. He farmed in the Eastman area and was an accomplished carpenter. He married Alma Stluka on Oct. 11, 1944 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman. Surviving are his wife Alma of Eastman; four sons, Ronald of Stoddard, Roger (Gloria) of Eastman, Charlie (Barbara) and David (Shirley) both of Prairie du Chien; three daughters, Mary (Butch) Pedretti and Nancy (Dallas) Valley both of Prairie du Chien and Gail (Terry) Coorough of DeForest; one sister, Ann Gerlach of Bloomington; two sisters-in-law, Marie Wall, Prairie du Chien and Maxine Wall of Eastman; 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Joseph and Bernard and one brother-in-law, Robert Gerlach; and one granddaughter Trudy Ann Trautsch. Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Msgr. John McCarthy officiating with burial in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, both in Eastman. Friends may call Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Garrity Funeral Home where there will be a rosary at 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.

RUSSELL STEINER Russell M. Steiner, 40, Prairie du Chien, died March 1, 2002 as a result of a one vehicle accident. Russell was born Sept. 3, 1961 in Prairie du Chien to William L. and C. Marlene (Loney) Steiner. He graduated from Prairie High School in 1980 and from the College of Engineering at UW-Madison in 1984. He held engineering licenses in Wisconsin, Colorado and Arizona. He worked for Sargent & Lundy of Chicago, Ill., Westbrook & Associated and Edward Kraemer & Sons both in Plain. For the past ten years he was owner/president of Acme Construction, A.C. Utility Co. and SMK, LLC all companies that he established. He loved his work and enjoyed a challenge. He received the 2001 Concrete Structures Award for the Markley Hollow Bridge on CTH C on the Great River Road. He was a member of the Prairie du Chien Police and Fire commission. Surviving are his girl friend of seven years, Kari Haun of Viroqua; his father, William L. Steiner, Prairie du Chien; two brothers Garith (Julie) Steiner of Viroqua, Karl Steiner of Prairie du Chien; one sister, Rev. Stephanie Steiner, Viroqua; three nieces he loved dearly, Sarah, Megan and Kiernan Steiner, all of Viroqua. He was preceded in death by his mother, C. Marlene in February, 1997. The family wishes memorials be made in the RMS Engineering scholarship Fund or to Vernon Memorial Hospital, Viroqua. Services are Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien. KYLE KEENE Kyle D. Keene, 19, of Lagrange, Ind. died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at University Medical Center in Indianapolis, Ind. of cancer.

FLORENCE TAYEK Florence Tayek 95, of Calmar, Iowa, formerly of McGregor, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, Minn. following a long illness.

LEONA WHITE Leona M. White, 96, Glen Haven, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.
