Rathael O'Brien, 34,
was killed Thursday night at Eau
Claire, Wis., when the car he was
driving was struck by a train, according
to word received here.
Details of the accident were
lacking, except that he was driving
home from work at the time.
O'Brien formerly lived in Elma
and moved to Eau Claire about 10
years ago.
Surviving are his widow and two
children.
His mother, Mrs. John Timmerman,
lives at Minneapolis, Minn.
O'Brien attended Elma schools.
Miss Nina Fisher, 560 Leland avenue, has left for Cherry Point, N. C., to spend her vacation with her brother-in-law and sister, Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Robert Wright. Mrs. Merrill E. Knott, 215 Bertch avenue, who underwent a major operation at Presbyterian hospital, was reported yesterday to be making a satisfactory recovery. Robert J. Koch, 2702 East Fourth street, a World war II veteran and native of Waterloo, has been named manager of the W. G. Block Coal Co., 439 Vine street. George Loveall, Jr., and James Scharff, Waterloo students at Iowa State college, Ames, la., have been promoted to cadet corporal in the reserve officers training corps. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Bradley, 614 Grand avenue, report "the sunshine's fine." They're recovering after a month-long siege of pneumonia. Jay Judson Stambaugh, 1827 Commercial street, has enlisted in the marine corps for a period of one year and is en route to California to take his recruit training. Mr. and Mrs. Ray F. Bonk, 1720 Jefferson street, with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Slaughter, Sumner, la., returned Friday from a 4,050 mile trip that included visits to Austin, Houston, Galveston and the Rio Grande valley in Texas and to Monterey, Mexico. Mrs. Ruby Tyler and family of 1909 Locke avenue, accompanied by Russell Heidemann, 1942 Easton avenue, have returned from Lakeland air base, San Antonio, Tex., where they visited. Pfc. Lester Eric and Johnny Sly returned home with them. Mrs. Rachel Noonan returned Saturday morning to her home in Chickasaw, Ala. She had been called here by the death of her mother, Mrs. Ellen Murphy of Dike, and had been a houseguest of Waterloo relatives and friends. Ronald E. Gerholdt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Gerholdt, 1253 Lincoln street, who has been a patient for rheumatic fever in the U. S. naval hospital, Portsmouth, Va., the past few months, recently underwent surgery and is reported recovering satisfactorily. Pfc. Robert M. Brewer, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Brewer, 1533 Waterloo road, Cedar Falls, has completed his recruit training at the Marine Corps recruit depot, San Diego, Cal. Upon his return to San Diego from leave, Brewer will be sent to Marine Corps post in the United States. He will spend his entire one year enlistment in the United States. Mrs. Ben Peters, Wellsburg, left Friday evening for Berkeley, Cal., where she will visit in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peters. Mrs. Albin Teuchert, Dysart, is spending two weeks in the home of Mrs. Marie Wareham, Covina, Cal. Mrs. Walter Moe returned to St. Anagar Friday from Minneapolis, Minn., where she visited her sister, Mrs. George Linn. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Whitaker and three sons, Bruce, Joel and Steven, Chicago, are visiting Mrs Whitaker's parents, Mr. and Mrs W. C. Polderboer, Allison. B. K. Warner of Cresco went to New York City Friday to Join Mrs. Warner, who has been there a week. Mr. and Mrs. Warner will go from New York City to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., to spend two weeks. Mrs. Marguerite De Rusha of Cristobol, Panama, is in Decorah for a visit with her mother, Mrs Minnie Buenneke, and the Walter Buenneke family. Mrs. Roger Rima, who has been spending a month with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Wood, at Portland, Ore, returned to Decorah Saturday. Identical wedding gowns were worn by the Misses Josephine and Annabelle Lund, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lund, Route 2, Waterloo, when they became brides in a double nuptial event at 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Miss Josephine Lund was married to Marvin F. Busch, son of Henry Busch of Allison, and her younger sister was married to William E. Irvine, son of the John Irvines of Dysart. Mrs. Paul Murray entertained at a party yesterday afternoon to celebrate the eighth birthday anniversary of her daughter, Sylvia Murray. Mrs. R. A. Tennis is entertaining today at a family dinner for her husband, whose 73rd birthday anniversary will occur Monday. Lamont relatives will attend. Mr. and Mrs. James Worley entertained the home study group at a potluck dinner Thursday. Miss Marian Gee, West Union, will speak before the Luther college Woman's club at First Lutheran church parlors Tuesday. Her subject will be the Balkan states.
