M. L. Payne, has located in Merced where he has bought a business.

W. I. Weber, registered at one of the hotels in Reno recently.

Mrs. F. E. Love, is visiting relatives in Anderson and Bella Vista.

James G. Blaine, one of the worlds greatest statesmen, died at his home at Washington today. An illness of weeks preceded his death.

Mrs. S. V. Augustine, of Seattle, who formerly resided in this city,is visiting friends and relatives in East Oakland.

Judge Bergen, and wife of Berkeley, have returned from Sacramento.

Mrs. J. A. Folger, and Granville Abbott, are registered at the Redondo hotel.

The engagement is announced of Miss Lizzie Stone, and Kirby E. Smith.

Miss Barbara Sutton, was hostess recently at a very delightful luncheon at her home on Clay street. It was chaperoned by Mrs. A. M. Sutton. A number of Oakland debutantes crossed the bay to attend the affair. Among the maids who shared Miss Suttons hospitality were Miss Harriet Pomeroy, Miss Margaret Nichols, Miss Helen Garrett, Miss Mary Gayley, Miss Helen Wright, Miss Louisa Janin, Miss Henriette Blanding, Miss Corona Williams, Miss Dorothy Page, Miss Cora Otis, Miss Sophie Beylard and Miss Henrietta Harrison-Smith.

Miss Loma Williamson, the young daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Willard Williamson, entertained a number of her friends with a dance Saturday evening. About fifty enjoyed the informal dance and a delightful supper following at the Williamson home on Hillsdale avenue. The charming young hostess has not yet made her bow to society, but probably will be a debutante of next season.

Miss Grace Gibson, who was the honored guest at the beautiful ball given by her cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Hamilton, at the John D. Spreckels home on Pacific avenue,last week, will leave early in February for Coronado, where she will spend several weeks as the guest of her aunt, Mrs. R. Q. Dillworth.

A surprise party in the form of a masquerade ball was tendered W. F. Schuele, at his home in Fruitvale on Saturday evening.

Miss Eleanor Hook, and James Breck, were married last Tuesday at the home of the brides parents at 941 Madison street.

Marshall Hopper, and Miss Josephine Hopper, who has been visiting their aunt Mrs. W. T. laird, for the past two days.

Mr.and Mrs. Myers, spent a few days of last week in Stockton.

Dr. I. M. Leavenworth, the first alcalde of San Francisco, died at Santa Rosa today at the ago of 84.

Mrs. J. W. Henderson, will entertain at luncheon on Thursday afternoon of this week in honor of Mrs. Harry Morton, who is soon to leave for a trip abroad.

Mrs. Frank Greenwood, has recently returned from a six months pleasure tour.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Marion Walsh, were hosts Saturday night at a dinner dance at their home on Monte Vista avenue. About thirty guests enjoyed the affair, most of them being a group ot neighborhood friends of Mr. and Mrs. Walsh. The table was decked charmingly with flowers and ferns, and the ballroom was a study in green, ferns and huckleberry lining the walls.

Mr. and Mrs. Clement Horst, will entertain with a small dance at their home in Presidio Terrace next Saturday evening, at which the honored guests will be Miss Janet Painter, of Alameda, and Miss Theresa Harrison.

Mrs. Irwin Broughton, went to San Francisco, this morning to spend several days with relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Thomson, and little daughter visited the Panama-Pacific Exposition this week.

The Chautauqua Circle met at the home of Mrs. E. G. Keith, Friday afternoon.

Dr. and Mrs. T. F. Simms, went the Yosemite valley today to spend a week or ten days.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sutter, of Rock Rapids Iowa, were guests for a part of the week in the home of Mr. E. P. Peck.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Garrison, and daughters June and Roberta, motored to Lost City today to spend Decoration Day with Mrs. Garrisons mother, Mrs. R. Boyce.

Mrs. S. A. Seary, of San Francisco has been the guest this week of her friend Mrs. H. Hart.

Miss Mattie Seavy joined her mother here today to spend the weekend.

Miss Helen Craft, went to Oakland yesterday to spend the school vacation with her mother. She will attend the commencement exercises of the San Francisco normal school.

Mrs. Florence Elsey, of Palo Alto, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. Garrison Turner. Mrs. Elseys son Howard, who is well known in Modesto, received his masters degree from Stanford university last week.

Monroe, Wis,. May 29. While on his way home from a day's shopping at Rockford, W. H. Boyd, a prosperous farmer who lives just across the state line, brought his team to a walk and scratched his head. He was sure he had forgotten something.Try as he be would, he couldn't think what it was so he drove on. Arriving home his loud "whoa" brought the children out to see what daddy had brought them from the city, Their welcoming shouts were quickly silenced however, "Where's mamma?" they asked in chorus. Then Boyd knew what he had forgotten, his wife had accompanied him to the city and while she was making some purchases for herself, the absent minded father had driven home, without her. He broke all speed laws driving back to rockford 12 miles to pick her up.
