The immigration office here is
once again open, following a
closure of approximately three
weeks. The office opened Wednesday
morning, with A. W. Van Buskirk,
new inspection officer here in
charge. Van Buskirk arrived here
early this week from Kettle Falls,
Wash. He replaces Max Welton,
who left this city early this
month.
Van Buskirk has been with the
immigration and naturalization
service almost seven years. His
duties prior to coming to Fairbanks
were with the border patrol
division. The agent was stationed
almost three years in Paso, Tex.
Following that he was
with the service in New York
state, near Montreal, for eight
months.
The air force today identified the second of two fliers killed Tuesday in a crash of a jet training plane near Big Delta. He was 2nd Lt. Leonard D. Reed, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. Reed, of Liberty, Ind. The other victim was earlier identified as 2nd Lt. Barrel C. Biggs, of Sterling, ILL. The crash occurred about 125 miles southwest of Fairbanks The cause of the crash is not known. Mr. and Mrs. Mose Dallosto of Queens Court have as their guest Mrs. Dallosto's sister, Miss Madelene Zanatta of Renton, Washington. Miss Zanatta has been here over a week, seeing Fairbanks for the first time, she expects to fly home Sunday or Monday. Alien Smith, USO director, and his wife returned from Seattle by car Wednesday night after attending the wedding of their oldest son, Neil in Seattle, June 19. Son Allen Jr., who used to be stationed at Big Delta was best man. Gary Smith, who lives here with his parents, was at the wedding too, and two days later sailed from Vancouver, B. C. for Paris, where he will attend the YMCA world conference August 12-22. Mrs. Gertrude Morris, mother of Elkan Morris, local electrical contractor, arrived in Fairbanks yesterday morning for a month's visit with her son and his family. Mrs. Morris is from Arlington, Virginia. She hasn't seen her grandchildren, Robert and Jay Elan since they were babies, and is meeting her grandson Lance for the first time. This is her first trip to Alaska. Mrs. G. T. McDaniel teacher of remedial reading at Denali school came home Tuesday after a month's vacation in Washington She visited her sister and brother- in-law, Mr. and Mrs, J. L. Stevens, in Tacoma, and while she was there another sister with her daughter and granddaughter came from Hayden, Arizona for a visit. Mrs. McDaniel also had a visit with a sister-in-law in Kennewick, and did lots of traveling around the state.
